5 Tips To Making New Friends In College

By Shelley Ladin

You are attending College for the first time; this is both a scary and an exciting time in your life.  Scary, because you are leaving the feeling of the safety that you have known for 18 years embarking on an unknown adventure.  Exciting, because you have the opportunity for great things one of them, meeting new people, forging new relationships that will last a life time.

You will be leaving familiar territories, family and friends.  It’s okay to be nervous about this new chapter in your life.  Remember all the “firsts” you have already taken and you thrived.

Here are 5 tips to making new friends in college:

Tip #1
Attend events such as sporting activities.  Ask your new roommate if he/she would like to join you.

Tip #2
Check out Sororities and Fraternities.  Keep in mind these groups are not for everyone. You do not have to join to meet new friends or fit in.

Tip #3
Participate in a sport activity, such as tennis, swimming, running. You don’t have to be an all-star to participate. Perhaps you are into yoga or Pilates… you get the idea. This will also keep you in shape and keep you motivated and positive!

Tip #4
Scout out your new community.  Check the cultural events available; theater, book clubs, movies.  Find your religious affiliation and join a group, attend services.

Tip #5
Check your school’s website for school activities.  Read your local paper for events.  Where you live now is your community.  Go online to Yahoo.com or Google.com  and research your surrounding areas.  These are great places to go for a weekend away.  Get involved.

All work and no play…does not make for a better school experience.  Do your schoolwork, get help when you need it and have fun … Play a little!
